TLG/PHI software

The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and Packard Humanities Institute CD-ROMs are invaluable resources for all Classicists, but you still need the software to access them. Here it is:

• Online readers
  • Cental BetaCode to Unicode converter -- Two online conversion tools: one is for converting short passages of BetaCode, the other for converting entire TLG text files. Hosted by the Université catholique de Louvain. Currently unavailable.
  • Sean Redmond's Greek converter -- converts text from one Greek encoding to another (e.g. BetaCode to Unicode); the amount of text it can handle is limited, though.
  • TLG online -- online access to excellent, fast search-engine (requires expensive subscription).
• Windows
  • Antiquarium -- non-free.
  • Diogenes -- free and open source (GNU GPL).
  • Ibygrep and Libycus -- free; Libycus is also open source (GNU GPL). Command-line interface.
  • Lector -- non-free; can also manage SAUR and BTL.
  • Musaios -- non-free; does not support Unicode.
  • Silver Mountain Workplace -- non-free.
• Unix, Linux, etc.
  • CGreek -- for Emacs.
  • Diogenes -- free and open source (GNU GPL).
  • Primitive TLG reader -- translates TLG texts into SGreek, WordPerfect Greek, or Ibygreek LaTeX format.
  • TLG Index Utilities -- primarily designed to be used in conjunction with CGreek.
• Macintosh
  • Accordance -- non-free; designed for biblical texts; can be expanded to use TLG, but apparently not PHI.
  • Diogenes -- free and open source (GNU GPL).
  • Lexis -- non-free.
  • Pandora 3 -- non-free.
  • SNS-Greek & Latin -- non-free.
  • TLG Engine -- non-free; translates TLG texts into SuperGreek.

How to write meaningless nonsense

Useful for classicists -- or anyone else -- wanting to write impenetrable prose in order to disguise the fact that they have nothing new to say. (For the record, this means most books on the ancient world published since the late 1980s, especially ones derived from doctoral dissertations. Something that all graduating PhD students should be told: πολλὰ βιβλία, πολλὰ κακά.)
