 Unicode fonts  |  Non-Unicode fonts  |  Specialist fonts

Fonts for Classical (polytonic) Greek come in two basic types, or "codings": Unicode fonts, which use the ISO/Unicode standard; and other, idiosyncratic fonts.

Unicode fonts follow a standard for all international alphabets; this means that all Unicode fonts are interchangeable, i.e. you may change text from one Unicode font to another and the only change to the text will be its typeface. Therefore Unicode fonts are to be preferred in all circumstances. Non-Unicode fonts, such as SGreek, SuperGreek, TekniaGreek, etc., are for the most part incompatible with one another, and make transporting documents from one person to another extremely difficult. Use of these fonts is to be discouraged under all circumstances. This archive provides links for non-Unicode fonts for "legacy" purposes (i.e. backwards compatibility with older systems and older documents).

Follow the appropriate link for font-lists with download links, and other information.

The list is selective; I make no guarantee of thoroughness. The fonts listed are either

  1. freeware;
  2. shareware such that the user is permitted to trial the font free of charge; or
  3. commercial fonts that are included in widely-used proprietary software packages.

Even when a font costs nothing (i.e. when it is "free as in beer"), it will often come with a licence of some kind that lays restrictions on usage or re-distribution. Most fonts listed on this site are released either without explicit licensing information, or under an idiosyncratic licence. Only a few fonts are released under a genuinely free and copyleft licence (such as the Free Art Licence, the GNU GPL, or the Design Science License).
